The Rila Mountain
The Rila mountain, situated in the western parts of Bulgaria, will fascinate you with its magnificence and beauty. The Seven Rila Lakes are a traditional gathering place for the followers of the White brotherhood who celebrate the union of the human soul and nature each summer in August. The impressive architectural complex of the Rila Monastery is nestling in the northwestern foothills of the Rila mountain. It is the biggest monastery in Bulgaria and a significant cultural monument. The Rila monastery boasts an incredibly rich and well-preserved decoration with murals and wood-carvings by self-taught masters. There are also good conditions for cross-country skiing and sledding. Some of the ski runs start from the Seven Rila Lakes chalet. Nestling on the eastern slopes of the Rila mountain, the small resort town of Semkovo offers perfect conditions for winter sports and summer mountain hiking.
